    1940 US Census Index Simulation

    Good Morning and Happy Tuesday, there is only a couple more weeks left til the official release of the 1940 US Census Index, 20 days according to the Count down clock.  You can try your hand at indexing the 1940 US Census through an indexing simulation. Just simply download and launch the indexing software. Then click on the Download Batch button in the software interface. At the top of the list of available projects, choose either *SIMULATION* 1940 US Census (Part 1) or *SIMULATION* 1940 US Census (Part 2) and then click the OK button to download one of these batches.

    For those who are participating as members of societies, Getting Started with Indexing includes instructions on associating an indexing account with a specific society or other indexing group.

     

    These images on the simulation have been created based on the 1940 census form and are not real historical records. Additionally, there is only one training batch under each simulation. Use these simulation batches to learn what the 1940 census will be like or to train others prior to the release of the 1940 census.

    1940 Census Project

    ON APRIL 2, 2012, NARA will provide access to the images of the 1940 United States Federal Census for the first time. Unlike previous census years, images of the 1940 U.S. Federal Census will be made available as free digital images.

     

    I received an email that the 1940 Census will have  a joint venture between many Genealogy Organizations. Archives.com, FamilySearch, findmypast.com, and other leading genealogy organizations, will organize resources to provide quick access to these digital images and immediately start indexing these records to make them searchable online with free and open access. You can become part of the Volunteer Project at The 1940 Census.

    The projects  now available to help you learn how the indexing software works and to help you train for the release of the 1940 US federal census on April 2. These projects include the following:

    • Iowa 1895 State Census
    • New York 1855 State Census
    • WWI Draft Registration Cards (multiple states)
    • WWII Draft Registration Cards (multiple states)
    • US Passenger Lists (multiple states)
    • 1890 Census of Union Veterans and Widows
