  • Researching your Genealogy

There are a few days left with Ancestry.com free weekend. Ancestry.com is a great place and the largest resource for Genealogy. However, there are many different sites to find this information; some may have more information than others. Here is a list of the various links, and their benefits.

Ancestry.com: the largest and oldest site that has forums that allow researchers to share information between each other. Ancestry.com also interfaces with its Genealogy software Family Tree Maker 2011 PLUS Deluxe Family History Toolkit Bundle at Ancestry.com. RootsWeb General Search is also connected to Ancestry.com, and is a free option. The amount of resources you can achieve on Ancestry is limitless. Search Military Records, Historic Newspapers Online, Social Security Death Index, Adjustable Surname Search Link, Search Birth, Marriage and Death Records including Obituary Collection .

WorldVitalRecords.com is another Utah based subscription research site. It offers many of the same benefits as Ancestry.com. It is the host company for Family Link, also known as We’re Related on Facebook. The link that us Genealogists use to link up our family on Facebook.

OneGreatFamily, Archives.com, are also paid subscription sites. Not as large or as old as Ancestry.com.

There are some really useful Genealogy sites that are free, FamilySearch.org, RootsWeb General Search.

There are also volunteer organizations where you can seek the help of Genealogists in the local area’s that your ancestors lived. RAOGK.com, is a really helpful site, one that I volunteer for. I also follow Cyndi’s List, her site is full of useful information and easy to follow.

There are many sites out there to research your Genealogy. Some are paid subscriptions, some are free. I personally am leary of most the free sites that have been popping up. How secure is their information, is that data verified information? RAOGK, Family Search, and Cyndi’s list are the ones I trust the most if you are going the Free route. I know that those sites are secure and verified links.

  • Google for Genealogists

Last summer I read that Google had wonderful ways of helping Genealogists discover information. Lisa Louise Cooke wrote a book called “The Genealogists Google Toolbox” that I first heard about on Family Tree University.  Family Tree University is now offering a limited amount of her book, a webinar, and other goodies for Genealogists to expand their research on Google successfully. Today was the first day of this special and already nearly half of the 200 available are gone. You can even watch the free Webinar with Lisa Louise Cooke http://www.familytreeuniversity.com/free-webinar-ask-google-guru

  • Genealogist’s Google Toolbox book signed by Lisa
  • Google Earth for Genealogy DVDs (2 volumes)
  • Search Engine Tips & Tricks (1 hour on-demand webinar)
  • Google Tools for Genealogists independent study course
  • Family Tree Maker 2012

There are many sites out there that meet several different needs for every Genealogist. All of them have added features that include web sharing. A few years back I searched for genealogy software that offered photograph and Web design features. Preserving my families photos is very important to me. There is so much that I had never seen, and wish I knew the stories behind the faces. As a military family we travel around quite a bit, so the web is a useful tool to keep in touch and share data with family. The newest features of the new Family Tree Maker 2012 will make sharing a lot easier for families. These new features are:

          1.       TreeSync- the ability to synchronize your tree between Ancestry.comand Family Tree Maker

    2.       Blended Family view- now you can add step children, step relatives easily

    3.       Index of Individuals Report

    4.       Chart improvements- show generation labels, add your text anywhere in the chart, and Option to limit descendant chart to the direct lineage between people.

    5.       Report improvements- Custom fact sentences, automatic smart story generation, which includes individual, spouse, and children, and the research notes report is changed to “Notes Report” with the options to also include several other types of notes.

As with the prior Family Tree Maker Software organizing media files, enhancing your family trees with Charts, photos, audio, video, and much more will still be included. September 2011, Ancestry.com and Family Tree Maker is releasing the newest version FTM 2012. I am looking forward to receiving my copy of family tree maker this month and sharing with you all my full review of the software.

Don’t forget this is the free week on Ancestry.com

    Start Looking

  • Martha Coffee, mystery

Recently I was going through papers that my mom had given me years ago. I came across a copy of an old newspaper article on Martha Coffee. This was a name I had not come across on any of the other documents. I sat and read about this young mother who while tending to her sick husband and young infant went down to the creek to gather the horses when she was attacked by Commanche Indians and Murdered. Her scalped body found later by neighbors who came by to check on the young family.

This really got my curiousity up, who was this lady that has the same name as my Grandma’s Great Grandfather Francis Marion Coffee, father of Nancy Ola Coffee Akin. There is nothing about her on any of our documents that I can find, however finding information about women through Genealogy is rather a complicated task to begin with. Sadly many died during child birth, and documents weren’t often kept on women of that time.

The next approach I took was to Google her Name and the Cemetery Name from the News Article, Alameda Cemetery of Eastland County Texas. During the 1860’s the settlement was still very wild. I did find that Ruth Terry Denny wrote a book on the account of the incident named “A Short History of Ranger Texas”, I really hope that I can find a local copy at the library. Maybe there will be more in there to clear this up.

Martha Coffee was apparently the first grave on the settlement according to the ManskerChronicles
Which it matches the newspaper article written by the Eastland County Paper. But the story doesn’t end there. Found another written story article about Martha Coffee, but this gentleman called her Elizabeth Coffer, grave marked as Martha Coffee. He wrote of accounts given to him by a nearby neighbor during the time, that Mrs. Lewis Coffer who was a short tempered lady that was killed in 1867, however the grave marker states 1860 killed by Inians on the Duffer Ranch. That is a 7 year gap in dates of Death and accounts so different from each other.

With limited records from these early settlements it is hard to confirm the true identity of this young lady with a tragic ending. I have not found anything yet that indicates a Martha Coffee in our family, but there must be a reason that this article was in with all the other records. The Coffee family was from the Texas area and not one that I have worked to verify yet. This mystery is going to take me to a new direction, a little side step to see where this fits into the Coffee family, which already had been debated. There was a long debated story that we were part Indian, now I wonder if through the years this story has taken a different twist and her death is truly what happened, if she was even related.

  • Digital Scrapbooking layouts

I wanted to share the different pages that can be made with the two programs side by side. I love them both! They both are flexable and affordable-which was important when I was looking for a way to create great scrapbooks with all these cute old photographs. I didn’t want to cut up the old photos and couldn’t afford to make tons of duplicates to share. Going Digital has opened the possibilities of sharing these with family.

made with My Memories Scrapbook Software, this is one of my fur babies. Squeak, we got him when he was barely 5 weeks old from the Animal Control Center in Alamogordo. He was covered head to toe in fleas and malnourished. We took him in to see if he would get along with our two other cats. And after cleaning him up and adopting him, he has become family. Its been 6 years now and he isn’t as small as he once was.

Made with DaisyTrail – Everything you need for Digital Scrapbooking, Crafting, Greeting Cards, Baby Photobooks, DIY Wedding Invitations and more!

This layout is of one of my little sisters and I when we were little. There aren’t many pictures that I have found of us girls. We have many years in between us 4, I am the oldest, my youngest sister is 12 years younger than me.

You can mix and match the embellishments to create true works of art.
